Improvement - November Theme

HPIAM Data

  • Fact: 34% of HPIAM students have below a 2.0 GPA
  • Why is this a worrying statistic?
    - Will not graduate.
    - The reason why this is a worrying statistic is because students who aren't doing so great can be affected in the future. They can do better if they put their mind to it.
  • What are some specific reasons you think this is happening? How can we solve this problem (concrete ideas)?
    - I think this is happening because students who have a low GPA is because they are fooling around in class, getting kicked out of class, and not paying attention or studying. The best way to solve this problem is by giving those students an opportunity to attend Saturday school. Maybe even sending a flyer home so their Parents are informed.

The Working Notebook

The working notebook is the daily notebook taken top class. It holds all the papers and information needed each day. Any three-ring binder can serve as a working notebook; the nylon zippered type tends to last longer. Your working notebook should contain:

  • A potable three-hole punch
  • A zippered pouch with three holes to hold highlighters, pencils, pen, clips, "sticky notes", and other small supplies
  • A monthly calendar
  • A ruler
  • Section dividers for each subject labeled homework, notes, handouts, and quizzes/ tests
  • An assignment book
Theses items are available at most office supply stores in a three-hole punched format so they can eb easily inserted into the notebook. This important, because if the items are not attached to the notebook, they will get lost in backpacks or left at home or school.

One working notebook for all of your child's classes might be too large for some students, especially if they are in high school. Two medium-size notebooks with two or three subjects in each is an alternative to one large notebook. Morning classes might be placed in one, and afternoon classes might be placed in another.

Whichever alternative noted above you choose, the important thing is that on a daily basis, you should date, three-hole punch and file any of his school papers under the appropriate divider for each subject. You should also note assignments in detail in his assignment book.

HPIAM: Advisory Project

Next Tuesday, November 5th, bring all your work from all classes in order to show the organization required from each class. You will have time in Advisory to hole punch and organize your binders, folders, notebooks, etc. So you need to come prepared.

Prompt 4

Thanks to the Internet, people have more access to more information than at any other time in history. People can instantly find information on almost any topic in the time it takes to type a couple of words and click a mouse. But we often know so little about the source of this information, including its reliability and the qualifications of the person who wrote it. If we don't know its source, information is not so much good to us.

Assignment:

  1. Do people need to know the source of any information before they use it?

    - Yes, people should know a little more about the source in which they are getting information from before they use it. If you want to get information online make sure that it is clear and up to date.

  2. Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

The Internet has tons and tons of information but is the information you get from the Internet reliable? Can you really trust the Internet? To get information from the Internet there is some guidelines to follow.  You must make sure the information you are about to use is up to date and the website is clear.
I personally use the Internet for school projects. Sometimes I would much rather get information from a book, or movie, etc. For example, WikiPedia is pretty much likely not to trust. The reason why is that anybody can change the information on that website, they can either be wrong or write you never know who writes it. One must be sure to look at different websites with different information about the same topic and decide which one sounds more convincing to you. Take down notes and ask someone who you think has more knowledge about the topic you are researching. For example, if you are researching on a disease you can search it up on the Internet, record your notes and ask a Health teacher.

Advisory.

Many colleges now offer courses in which student study television programs, comic books, magazines, advertising, and other aspects of popular culture. Critics complain that schools should not replace serious literature and history courses with such fluff. They claim that courses in popular culture present material that is trivial and inconsequential. But the study of popular culture can be just as important, demanding, and instructive as the study of traditional subjects.

Q: Can the study of popular culture be as valuable as the study of traditional literary and historical subjects?

A: I think that the study of popular culture isn't as valuable as the study as traditional literary and historical subjects. The study of popular culture is sort of like an elective - something fun or interesting, but yet you still can learn. For example: Music. I have have history, math, English, etc. and those are basically "traditional subjects" and I have music, which is categorized as an elective. If colleges are offering popular culture, I say why not take it? Guaranteed you'll learn something new and it will give you a chance to prepare for what the future may bring.

Advisory. October 8, 2013

Assignment:
Is it possible for a society to be fair to everyone? Plan and write an essay in a new post of your portfolio in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Response:
I think society isn't fair to everyone. It could be possible but it is isn't. "All men are created equal" is a quote that its meaning is that everyone is equal or that everyone has equal rights. Society isn't fair to people because there's always someone who is going to judge, racism, discrimination, etc. For example: a woman's paycheck. Society is unfair to females because they receive a lesser pay than men even they do the same work. Another example is the height of someone. Studies show that the chance of a taller person is higher than the chance of a shorter person getting hired. Personally, I've been a witness of bullying in Elementary. I still remember 'till this day an older kid bullying a smaller student just because of his hair cut. In conclusion, I believe society isn't fair. In the future, hopefully this changes for the best of all.

Society?

advisory assignment.

Educational Goals
1.    Pass the 10th grade with good grades.

2.    Graduate high school.

3.    Go to college.

4.    Do all homework assignments.

5.    Pass AP world history with an “A”.

6.    Improve the classes I’m failing.

7.    Go to a university.

8.    Join extra-curricular activities.

Reflection:
These educational goals aren’t dreams they are goals, they are goals for a reason.. WE want to achieve these goals. For example: a soccer player wants to score by kicking the ball to its goal, that’s his aim, he need to make the ball into the goal in order to score a point and perhaps win the game. It’s okay to be competitive to achieve our goals. Maybe you can help someone out when you can and they would appreciate it very much. If you achieve your personal goals I’m sure you and the ones who care about you will be very proud. I think I want to pursue these goals, I think they mean a lot and they will help me become a better person.
